After Sandhyavandanam and Ashtakshara Japa, we chant the Dvayam, Charama Sloka, and Sriya Mantras. It is said that Ashtaksharam and Dvayam should be chanted 108 times. How many times should we chant the Dvayam, Charama Sloka, and Sriya Mantras? Does the rule of “Sama Sankhya” (equal count) apply only to Ashtaksharam, or does it apply to Dvayam, Charama Sloka, and Sriya Mantras as well? What have our Purvacharyas said regarding this?

The “Sama Sankhya” rule applies only to the relationship between Gayatri Japa and Ashtaksharam. That is, how many times you perform Gayatri Japa, you should chant the Ashtaksharam the same number of times. Regarding other mantras, our tradition suggests chanting them as much as possible—perhaps in counts of 10, 28, or 108, depending on one’s ability.
