Keeping Golu (a festive display of dolls) is a custom that has been followed for many generations. It is customary to keep traditional dolls in the Golu—specifically those that have existed since the times of one’s mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. Clay dolls tend to get old or break after a few days; there is a high chance of this happening. In those days, dolls made of paper pulp did not exist. Therefore, if a doll is made of wood, it lasts for a very long time and remains in good condition. Also, they can be passed down to successive generations. It is customary to keep Marapachi dolls (traditional red sandalwood dolls) in the Golu.
